India’s foodgrain production estimated at 330 million tonnes for 2022-23: Third Advance Estimate

Total foodgrain production in India is estimated at a record 330.5 million tonnes (MT), according to the Third Advance Estimate released by the Centre on May 25, 2023. This is higher by almost 15 million tonnes as compared to 2021-22, according to an official statement.

Total production of rice during 2022-23 is estimated at 135.5 MT. It is higher by 6 MT as compared to previous year. Wheat production is estimated at 112.7 MT, which is higher by 5 MT as compared to the previous year’s production.

The production of maize during 2022-23 is estimated at 35.9 MT, 2.2 MT higher than the previous year’s production.

Coarse cereal production is estimated at 54.75 MT, 3.65 MT than the previous year’s production.

India will produce an estimated 3.74 MT of Moong which is higher by 5.74 MT as compared to the previous year’s production.

Total pulses production during 2022-23 is estimated at 27.5 MT which is higher by 0.2 MT than previous year’s production of 27.3 MT.

The production of Soybean and Rapeseed & Mustard is estimated at 14.97 MT and 12.49 MT respectively, which is higher by 1.98 MT and 0.53 MT respectively than the production of previous year 2021-22.

Total oilseeds production in India during 2022-23 is estimated at 40.99 MT which is higher by 3 MT than the previous year’s oilseeds production.

Total production of sugarcane in India during 2022-23 is estimated at 49.42 MT. The production of sugarcane during 2022-23 is higher by 54.8 MT than the previous year’s production.

Production of cotton is estimated at 34.35 million bales (of 170 kg each) and production of jute & mesta is estimated at 9.49 million bales (of 180 kg each).

The assessment of production of different crops is based on the feedback received from states and validated with information available from other sources.

This assessment shall undergo further revision over successive estimates based upon feedback received from the states, alternative sources and other factors.
