The manufacturing sector in India is the second biggest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. In 2023, real-time data suggested 108 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) of emissions from three types of power plants: Cement, steel and aluminium.
Analysis of near-real-time data showed the emissions from domestic as well as international travel — shipping and aviation — had left a CO2e footprint of over 37 million tonnes in 2023.
While Down To Earth could not independently assess how much greenhouse gases were emitted by the transportation sector — which also includes road transportation — due to a lack of near-real-time data, the sector on the whole was the fourth biggest contributor of greenhouse gases from 2015 to 2022.
