NGT raps CPCB

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on January 7, 2020 expressed displeasure at reports filed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) on compliance of waste management and other issues in different states and Union Territories as earlier ordered.

There were huge gaps in information given by the CPCB in its December 2019 and January 2020 reports, the tribunal said and directed the CPCB to redesign formats and secure relevant quantifiable information from chief secretaries. The NGT directed information to be furnished on three aspects:

  1. Solid waste management, including remediation of legacy
  2. Sewage treatment and restoration of 351 polluted river stretches
  3. Air quality management in 102 (122) non-attainment cities.

Maha tiger corridors

The NGT in a January 6 order directed the National Tiger Conservation Authority to modify its action plan to reduce the time taken in wildlife-protection measures.

The Tribunal was looking into the matter of new road projects obstructing tiger corridors in Maharashtra. The plan would be binding on the project proponents “irrespective of their consent and may be enforced by halting the projects wherever necessary till the suggested measures are duly adopted.”

Faridabad sewage overflow

The NGT on January 7  directed the Faridabad district magistrate and Haryana State PCB to submit a factual and action-taken report on sewage from Seekri village overflowing on to the service road and on a stretch of Delhi-Agra Highway.

Gorakhpur distillery

The NGT on January 6 directed the Uttar Pradesh PCB to submit a report on the action taken against the Saraya distillery in Sardarnagar, Gorakhpur for extracting groundwater without requisite permission.
