Three years into the COVID-19 pandemic, SARS-CoV-2 is not showing signs of leaving. Cases of infections are again showing an uptick around the world, including in India. On March 22, the country reported a single-day rise of 1,134 new COVID-19 cases — the highest yet in 2023 — with the active cases in the country surpassing the 7,000 mark.

There were 7,605 active cases of COVID-19 in India, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare website, at 11 am on March 23, 2023. On March 21, the number of active cases in the country was 6,559, while on March 20, it was 6,350. 

Kerala has the highest number of active cases, followed by Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka.

While the number of new COVID-19 patients in the last 24 hours was 1,134 on March 22, 646 new cases were reported on March 21 and 918 new cases were found on March 20. The last time daily cases crossed the 1,000 mark in India was 1,046 new cases reported on November 01, 2022.

Both daily and weekly positivity rates were 0.08 per cent, on March 22, according to health ministry data. The number of recovered patients in 24 hours was 662. The death toll in the country was 530,816 on March 23.

Meanwhile, there’s a surge in cases globally as well — over 665,000 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the last 7 days worldwide, along with 4,178 deaths. In the United States, 170,000 new infections have been reported in the last week, along with 1,887 deaths.  

The number of total patients in China has now reached 99 million and 120,576 people have died so far, according to the World Health Organization. In the last week, China reported 53,283 new infections. 

As of March 22, 2023, Kerala has 1,921 active cases in India, while Maharashtra has 1,489. Similarly, 916 cases are active in Gujarat, 624 in Karnataka, 441 in Tamil Nadu, 190 in Telangana, 270 in Delhi, 193 in Himachal Pradesh, 150 in Rajasthan and 125 in Goa.

If you look at the figures, the rate of active cases in the country is 0.01 per cent, while the recovery rate has reached 98.8 per cent.

Maharashtra has reported 8,140,145 cases till now, of which 7,990,227 patients have recovered. Kerala is in the second spot with 6,832,679 cases so far. Karnataka follows it with 4,075,637 cases, 3,595,756 in Tamil Nadu and 2,339,113 in Andhra Pradesh.

Uttar Pradesh had 2,128,356 cases, 2,118,911 in West Bengal, 2,008,087 in Delhi, 1,336,738 in Odisha, 1,315,824 in Rajasthan. Gujarat reported 1,279,010 cases while 1,267,046 have recovered so far.

Chhattisgarh has had 1,177,814 cases, 1,056,920 in Haryana, 1,055,027 in Madhya Pradesh, 851,434 in Bihar, 842,287 in Telangana, Punjab 784,629, followed by Assam 746,101.

India has conducted about 654,291 tests per million people. Along with this, 22.06 million vaccine doses have been given so far in the country.

According to the data released by the Union health ministry till March 22 2023, 8:00 am, the number of cases in the country has increased to 44,698,118. So far, 530,813 people have died due to infection while 44,160,279 patients have recovered across the country.
