Factories making Apple iPads and iPhones in China are forcing staff to sign pledges not to commit suicide, an investigation by two international NGOs, Centre for Research on Multinational Companies and Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbe-haviour, revealed.
At least 14 workers at Foxconn factories in China have killed themselves in the past 16 months due to horrendous working conditions.
Many are believed to have survived at-tempts or been stopped be-fore trying at the Apple supplier’s plants in Chengdu and Shenzen. The pledge was brought in after Chinese sociologists wrote an open letter to the media calling for an end to restrictive working practices.
