They know little of the Copenhagen slugfest, but a couple in a Uttar Pradesh village decided to do their bit to check climate change. Sangam Singh and Mandvi Singh of Matond village in UP’s Banda district solemnized their marriage with a pledge to spread the message of climate change mitigation.
The rituals, like the groom’s arrival at the bride’s home, the wedding, the departure of the bride were marked by planting tulsi saplings. The couple were cheered, “hum do, hamare chaar”. A take on the government slogan, hum do hamare do, which promotes the two children policy, the four here is the number of saplings the couple will plant every year for the rest of their lives.
