The ninth session of the Plenary of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES9) will be held in Bonn from July 3-9, 2022. Representatives of 140 governments will meet in the German city to consider two new scientific reports on sustainable use of wild species and values and valuation of nature.

The last physical IPBES meeting (Paris, 2019) saw the launch of Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, which alerted the world millions of plants and animals species facing extinction — many within decades.

German environment minister Steffi Lemke welcomed the “important work” done by IPBES:

... especially its focus this week on values and the sustainable use of wild species — as a vitally important contribution to the global, regional and national efforts to protect biodiversity more effectively. Our policies and actions must be based on this kind of science and evidence — especially as we move closer to agreeing on a new global biodiversity framework at the UN Biodiversity Conference in December.

The plenary is also expected to consider approving the start of a new multi-year IPBES assessment of the links between business and biodiversity.

The ninth session aims to conduct a thematic evaluation of the sustainable use of wild species and offer a methodological analysis regarding diverse conceptualisation of multiple aspects of nature and the benefits it offers including the biodiversity and ecosystems services and functions. The event will also evaluate the scope for a methodological assessment for the impact and reliance of business on biodiversity and contribution of nature to people.
